Setting up a Bluetooth receipt printer (Android)

An ordinary Bluetooth receipt printer (e.g. POS-80, POS-58 or a mobile receipt printer) prints your receipts as soon as it is paired with your Android tablet or smartphone and the DiKAS app is running there. Setup takes about two minutes and guides you step by step — with a test print, so you can see right away that everything works.

What you need

  • A Bluetooth receipt printer with ESC/POS (almost all receipt printers support it), with paper loaded.
  • An Android device with the current DiKAS app — download and operating mode: see DiKAS on Android. It does not work in the browser: only the app can talk to Bluetooth printers.
  • A user with access to Admin → Settings.

No hardware agent needed

You do not have to install any extra program or change anything on the router. The Android device with the app talks to the printer directly.

Set up in 4 steps

  1. Open the app and sign in. Open Admin → Settings → Hardware → Printers and tap + Bluetooth printer. The setup assistant opens.
  2. Pair.

    1. Switch the printer on.
    2. Tap Open Bluetooth settings and pair the printer in the Android settings (the PIN is usually 0000 or 1234).
    3. Switch back to DiKAS.

If the printer is already paired in Android, skip this step with Next. If Android asks for the "Nearby devices" permission, tap Allow Bluetooth and grant it. 3. Choose the printer. All paired devices appear as cards, printers first. The list refreshes by itself. Tap your printer. Then enter a name (e.g. "Bar till") and choose the paper width: 80 mm (wide receipt) or 58 mm (narrow receipt). 4. Test print. Tap Test print. The button shows Connecting… → Sending… → Sent. If the test receipt comes out of the printer, tap Yes, it works and then Done — the printer is saved. If you had no default printer yet, it automatically becomes the receipt printer.

How you know it will work the same way

The test print takes the same route as every receipt. If the test receipt comes out, your receipts will too. You can repeat the test print at any time in the printer list (printer icon in the row).

What next?

As with any printer, you decide what is printed there — e.g. the receipt or the orders of an article group: Articles & Printers: Quick Start. Cut, cash drawer and receipt layout are set in the printer list and the receipt editor, just like for a network printer.

Good to know

  • The app must be open and signed in for printing to work. If it is closed, the receipt waits and is retried.
  • The printer must be paired with this device. If the same printer is paired with two devices, the device that picks up the job first prints it.
  • "Sent" does not mean "paper is out". Bluetooth does not report out-of-paper or an open lid. If a receipt does not appear, check paper and lid at the printer — then repeat the print under Menu → Printers → Retry all.
  • Range: keep the printer within sight, usually 5–10 meters works.
  • The printer must not be connected to another device (e.g. your phone) at the same time, otherwise it refuses the connection.

Errors and remedies

What you see Cause and remedy
The list is empty The printer is not paired in Android. Open Bluetooth settings, pair it, return to DiKAS — the list fills by itself. Bluetooth switched off? Switch it on.
Allow Bluetooth appears Android has not granted the "Nearby devices" permission yet. Tap it and allow, then Reload.
The + Bluetooth printer button is missing, note "Only in the DiKAS Android app" You are in the browser. Open the DiKAS app on the Android device.
Test print: "Test print failed" Printer on? In range? Paired with this device and not connected to another one? Then Print again.
Test print sent, but nothing comes out Paper loaded, lid closed, correct paper width (58/80 mm)? Some printers need a few seconds after switching on.
Umlauts or € are wrong Enter the character table in the ESC t column of the printer list — see Hardware.
Receipt is cut off on the right or too narrow Check paper width and graphics width in the printer list (80 mm printers: 512 or 576 dots).
Message "No response" for the test receipt from the printer list Open the DiKAS app on the device, sign in and keep it in the foreground.

Which printer?

Any Bluetooth receipt printer with ESC/POS works. For continuous use at a fixed till, a network printer (LAN/WLAN) is more reliable — Bluetooth is ideal on the go, in the beer garden and for delivery drivers. See Hardware.
