Android Handheld with Built-in Printer¶
Some Android handhelds have a receipt printer built into the housing. DiKAS can print on it directly: invoices, receipts and kitchen tickets come out of the device you are holding — no network printer, no cable, no extra software. This page shows which devices can do this and how to set up the printer in a few minutes.
Supported Devices¶
| Device | Built-in printer | Status |
|---|---|---|
| iMin Swift 2 Pro | Thermal printer, 58 mm paper | ✅ Supported and tested by us |
| Other iMin models | depends on the model | ⚠️ Not tested by us — please ask support first |
| Handhelds from other manufacturers (e.g. Sunmi, PAX) | — | ❌ Not supported at the moment |
All other printers keep working as before: network receipt printers (Epson, Star, Bixolon), kitchen and bar printers, and printers on a DiKAS box. A handheld can use the built-in printer in addition to these.
Paper and cash drawer
The built-in printer uses 58 mm thermal paper. A cash drawer cannot be connected to it — the open command is dropped on the handheld. There is no built-in cutter: instead of cutting, the printer feeds the paper to the tear-off edge, and you tear the receipt off there.
Requirements¶
- A supported handheld (see above) with a built-in printer and paper loaded.
- The current version of the DiKAS app on the handheld — download and operating mode selection are described in DiKAS on Android. Older app versions do not know the built-in printer; the This device button (step 5) is missing then.
- The handheld is connected to a box or the cloud as a client, or runs as a full POS with its own licence. Both work.
- A user with access to Admin → Settings.
Setting Up in 6 Steps¶
Set it up on the handheld
Set up the printer directly on the handheld, not on the office PC. Only the handheld itself knows its ID (step 5).
- Open the app and sign in — as described in DiKAS on Android.
- Open the printer settings: Admin → Settings → Hardware → Printers.
- Add a new printer and give it a name, e.g. "Handheld bar".
- Select Device printer as the Type. DiKAS automatically sets the receipt width and graphics width to 58 mm and 384 dots; the ID field appears below.
- Tap the phone icon This device. DiKAS enters the handheld's ID (it starts with
imin-). - Save and check with Test print. The test receipt comes out of the handheld.
Afterwards, as with any printer, you decide what is printed there — e.g. the sales receipt or the orders of a product group. See Articles & Printers: Quick Start.
Several handhelds
Each handheld has its own ID. Create a separate printer entry for every device — each one on the device itself with This device.
How the Device Printer Works¶
- The handheld picks up its receipts itself. As soon as the POS creates a receipt for the device printer, the handheld takes it and prints it. For this, the DiKAS app must be open and signed in and running in the foreground. If the app is closed, the receipt waits and is tried again.
- Retry: If printing fails, DiKAS tries again several times. If the error persists, the receipt appears in the error list under Menu → Printers. There you restart it with Retry all.
- Backup printer: A backup printer takes over as with any other printer.
- Printer status: On the handheld itself the printer overview shows the state of the built-in printer: Ready, Cover open, Print head overheated, Paper missing or Print service not connected. In any of these states the device does not print until it is resolved.
Errors and Remedies¶
| What you see | Cause and remedy |
|---|---|
| The This device button is missing | You are not on the handheld itself, the app is too old or the device is not supported. Open the current app on the handheld and call up the printer settings there. |
| Message "The handheld did not pick up the job" | Open the DiKAS app on the handheld, sign in and keep it in the foreground, then Retry all. |
| Message "The device printer reports an error" | Check paper and cover on the handheld. The ID in the printer entry must match this handheld (tap This device again). Then Retry all. |
| Status Paper missing or Cover open | Insert a paper roll and close the cover. |
| Status Print head overheated | Pause briefly; the printer continues after it has cooled down. |
| Status Print service not connected | Close the app and open it again. If that does not help, restart the handheld. |
| Message "Print unconfirmed – please check" | The handheld did not confirm the print, the receipt may still have been printed. Look at the printer and retry only if it is missing — otherwise you get a duplicate receipt. |
| Error message about the ID when saving | Allowed are lowercase letters, digits and hyphen, at most 40 characters. The easiest way is to tap This device. |
